Two colors

Pigeon Cove Tool Co. (oil, 11" x 14")

My favorite Cape Ann painter, Jeff Weaver of Gloucester, gave a demonstration at the Rockport Art Association last summer. One of the things he explained really well was the use of two major contrasting colors, warmer and cooler, and letting one dominate. Here’s an exercise in that, and in catching low winter sun. I liked when he said, “You can break every rule. All that matters is how it looks.” That consoles me when I realize how few of the rules I even know.

  1. I love this painting so much! And, having just read the entire archives, I am in awe. I’m so thankful you’re are expressing your talents actively. And I love all the Van Gogh’y ones, twisted old trees n stuff. Beautiful!

  2. I forget all that was learned, now attacking without the burden of knowledge has helped loosen me up. Just kind of kidding.

    This is a nice painting.
